Live, learn, ride

Want to become a part of the Australian Cycling Academy? The Australian Cycling Academy (ACA) is expanding in 2019, to include a new development team for student athletes from Australia and around the world.

The ACA’s specialised High-Performance Student Athlete Program is a tailored, for-fee development program providing a platform for domestic and international young cyclists, female and male, to further their cycling careers whilst living and studying on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia.

As part of this new program, a new team, the Live, Learn, Ride NRS Team, will comprise athletes who have applied and been accepted in to our program to live on the Sunshine Coast, learn at the University of the Sunshine Coast, and ride the National Road Series. The LLR HP program riders will race a different schedule than our existing UCI Conti Pro Sunshine Coast team.

This exciting new initiative provides talented young cyclists access to a fully comprehensive cycling development plan, and a crucial first step on their path to a successful professional cycling career. This customised plan is developed and supported by our world class coaches with access to the internationally respected University of the Sunshine Coast High Performance Sport Unit who support our athletes with specialist coaches, sports medicines expertise and access to outstanding training facilities all located within an idyllic climate for high performance athlete development.

Most importantly, our philosophy is underpinned by our academy philosophy of "Live, Learn, Ride". Our students receive a guaranteed offer of a study placement at the University of the Sunshine Coast with specialist support to assist students to find the right choice of course and delivery mode to support their holistic development needs.

Paid Academy students will live and train with our UCI Continental Pro Team riders and benefit from racing exposure through Cycling Australia’s elite National Road Series. Selected athletes may have access to international race competition through our UCI Pro Team subject to individual rider performance.

Development Team Applications

First intake will begin in February 2019, applications for 2019 close on December 1, 2018. Successful applications will receive an invitation to attend a selection camp to be hosted at the University of the Sunshine Coast in January 2019.

Women's Team

The ACA is now seeking to escalate its plan to launch a women’s elite NRS development team at its University of Sunshine Coast base in the first half of 2019.

Buoyed by first year results and the success of their first female signing, the Sunshine Coast’s own Alex Martin-Wallace who was recently nominated as Australian Junior Cyclist of the year; team management are now forging ahead with plans to launch the women’s program in the first half of 2019; providing young Australian cyclists the same opportunities as our male athletes have enjoyed in the ACA’s inaugural season.

To assist in funding, ACA has launched an Australian Sports Foundation campaign specifically to support the women’s team, where supporters or businesses can make a fully tax-deductible donation.

If successful, the funding would secure a women’s team of 6 – 8 talented development level riders. The team will ride as the Women’s Sunshine Coast team on the National Road Series (NRS) around Australia.

The team provides these select athletes, a comprehensive cycling development plan as part of the Australian Cycling Academy. All riders would live locally, and train out of the team’s base at the University of Sunshine Coast, with access to the university’s acclaimed high-performance training facilities.

ACA Development Fund

We have paired up with the Australian Sports Foundation (ASF) to raise much needed funds to support our expansion and continued racing and other opportunities for our athletes.

The ASF’s mission is to help Australians fundraise to achieve their sporting goals. Since the ASF was founded by the Federal Government in 1986 it has helped over 1600 athletes, organisations and sporting clubs, from the grassroots level through to the elite, fundraise more than $350 million to fund their sporting projects and needs.

Our 'Live, Learn, Ride' philosophy and commitment to developing talented young male and female athletes coupled with our community programming and representation of the Sunshine Coast on the world stage creates opportunities for philanthropic individuals and organisations to support the objectives of the ACA and its talented athletes creating tangible community benefits and outcomes.

Funds raised by the ACA Sports Commission Fund will support:

  • The establishment of the ACA's women's program in 2019
  • Enable further investment in high performance resources for our athletes
  • Support athletes in relocation costs to live on the Sunshine Coast
  • Create increased racing opportunities for our teams through direct funding of team travel costs

The ASF is the only organisation in Australia to have Deductible Gift Recipient status for sports; all donations of $2 or more are tax deductible.
